En el Perú, se enfrenta un aumento alarmante en los casos de dengue, con un registro de 24,981 afectados, que significa un
incremento del 97.9% en comparación al mismo periodo del año anterior, según el Ministerio de Salud (1). Este aumento no solo
refleja una creciente preocupación por la salud pública sino también una llamada urgente a la acción, especialmente para las
instituciones educativas como las universidades, que se encuentran en una posición privilegiada para intervenir eficazmente en
esta crisis.
La academia con su vasto recurso intelectual y comunidades comprometidas, tienen el potencial de ser catalizadores en la
prevención y el control del dengue. Su capacidad para generar investigación aplicada, innovación y conocimiento especializado
les permite desarrollar estrategias específicas y contextualizadas que pueden jugar un papel crucial en la mitigación de esta
enfermedad vectorial (2).
Primero, la investigación científica es una de las fortalezas más significativas de las universidades. Pueden liderar proyectos de
investigación sobre el comportamiento del vector del dengue, identifiquen los factores de riesgo locales y desarrollen
innovaciones en la detección temprana y el manejo de brotes. La colaboración interdisciplinaria dentro de las instituciones
puede fomentar el desarrollo de soluciones integrales, combinando áreas como la biología, la ecología, la medicina y la
ingeniería (2,3,4).
En segundo lugar, la educación y la sensibilización son fundamentales. Las universidades pueden implementar programas que
informen y eduquen a los estudiantes, al personal y a la comunidad en general sobre las prácticas de prevención del dengue,
como la eliminación de criaderos del mosquito y la importancia de la protección personal. Campañas educativas bien diseñadas
pueden generalizar el mensaje, alcanzando a comunidades más amplias y creando un impacto más significativo (2,3,5).
Además, las universidades pueden colaborar estrechamente con otras instituciones involucradas y las organizaciones
comunitarias, actuando como puente entre la investigación científica y la implementación de políticas y estrategias efectivas en
el terreno. Esta colaboración puede facilitar una respuesta más rápida y eficiente a los brotes, mejorando las intervenciones de
control y prevención basadas en evidencia (3,4).
En un momento en que el Perú enfrenta un aumento dramático en los casos de dengue, al 18 de marzo de 2024 con un saldo
lamentable de 70 vidas perdidas, lo que representa un aumento del 169 % respecto a las víctimas mortales reportadas en el
mismo periodo de 2023(6). la responsabilidad de las universidades se magnifica. No es solo una oportunidad para que estas
instituciones demuestren liderazgo y compromiso social, sino un imperativo ético para utilizar su conocimiento y recursos en la
protección de la salud pública.
Por lo tanto, instamos a las universidades a asumir un papel activo y decisivo en la lucha contra el dengue, movilizando su
experticia, capacidades de investigación y alcance comunitario. Al hacerlo, no solo estarán contribuyendo a salvaguardar la salud
de la población, sino también reafirmando su rol como pilares de innovación, liderazgo y compromiso social en nuestra
sociedad. La acción conjunta y la colaboración será clave para superar este desafío en salud pública y evitar futuros daños a la
salud individual y colectiva.
